"Self Reliance" questions

1) A theory that "transcendent forms" of truth exist beyond reason and experience; every individual is capable of discovering this truth on his or her own, through intuition.

2) A conviction that people are inherently good and should follow their own beliefs, however controversial they may be

3) A belief that humankind, nature, and God are all interconnected

What is the main theme of "Self-Reliance"?
The theme of this paper is clearly stated in the title "Self Reliance" - rely on yourself -.

What is Emerson speaking of when he mentions consistency, and why does he berate it as "the hobgoblin of little minds'?

This quote from Self-Reliance addresses the problem of rigid ideology, habit, and resistance to change. Flexibility, progress, and open mindedness can lead to a wealth of knowledge.

Writer Henry James argued that Emerson had no concept of the evil that exists in the world.  In James' words, it was "a side of life as to which Emerson's eyes were thickly bandaged...He had no great sense of wrong...no sense of the dark, the foul, the base."  In your opinion, is this a valid criticism of Emerson?  Citing evidence from "Self-Reliance" explain why or why not.

No it is not an accurate criticism of Emerson. He knew "the base", but believed that they had the power to rise above and think further thereby he refused to recognize them as "the foul" that Henry James argues they are.

Lastly - write a precis of "Self-Reliance".

Ralph Waldo Emmerson in his essay "Self Reliance" asserts that one should rely on their true self and not conform to society's whims. Emmerson uses contrastment between youth and adulthood and a metaphorical babe to emphasise how you are your own thinker, and everyone has the chance to think. In "Self Reliance" Emmerson is addressing the entire population of the world urging them to think outside the box, rely on their self, and be a nonconformer.

  1. The Henry James questions - you were suppose to cite evidence from the essay.
